Abstract

The study established the Status and Species distribution of wild mammals within four provinces (Modiah, Loder, Ahwar and Al-Mahfed) of Abyan Governorate. The study was carried out between March 2021 and November 2023, based on fieldwork using traps, and binoculars to monitor them and add tracking their effects and interviews with local people. The local and Arabic names of each species and its distribution were mentioned. The results showed the presence of nine species related to six families represented by the following families: Felidae, Canidae, Herpestidae, Viverridae, Hyaenidae and Mustelidae, which belong to the order of carnivora in Abyan governorate.

The current study showed the status of registered species according to the IUCN Red List, which showed that 7 species are among the least endangered species (LC), and one endangered critically (CR) is the Panthera pardus nimr and one threatened near species (VU) is the Hyaena hyaena, and showed that the most important threat to which wild carnivorous mammals are exposed in Abyan governorate is the destruction of their natural habitats as a result of human activity, wars and overfishing.
