Abstract

Narrative mode (or narrative "m00d") is key component of novelistic discourse, shaping how the story is presented through narration, scene, and reported speech. This paper examines the use of narrated mode in Yemeni fiction through a textual analysis of The Pious Man and the Virgin by Muhammad Masad al- Awdi. Drawing on modern narratology (Genette, Todorov, and Yaqtin), the study identifies the dominant modes in the novel and explains their aesthetic and functional roles. The findings show the predominance of narrated discourse alongside extensive dialogic scenes and frequent shifts between direct and indirect reporting, which contribute to polyphony and deepen characterization and event presentation.
